Is Google Moving Toward Linkless SEO? | Ft Myers Marketing

One of the biggest components of how we execute Ft Myers marketing for our clients is search engine optimization (SEO) – the art and science of getting a website to rank higher in search results pages and thereby earn more clicks and views.

Traditionally, links from outside websites to your own website has been a key metric in determining how highly your website ranks. After all, the thought is that by having a link come from an outside website, you are getting a sign that your content is useful, informative and relevant – thus Google thinks of you as a good source for searchers.

As pointed out by Elisa Gabbert over at WordStream, though, the era of link-based SEO may be coming faster than we know. She goes a step further and speculates that Google is working on a way to more or less ignore off-page SEO in favor of other metrics.

What does this mean for your website?

For starters, it means that other signals will become more important. Gabbert and others speculate that metrics that determine how people interact with your website will be key, metrics such as:

  • Time on page (how long a visitor stays on a page)
  • Bounce rate (the rate at which people come to a page then leave your site)
  • Click-through rate (the rate at which people click on your links and pages)
  • Social shares (the number of shares your page receives on social media)

This means there are a few considerations:

  1. You need to make sure your user experience is positive. This means a website that is easy to navigate.
  2. You need to ensure your content is solid. It needs to be relevant, informative, and entertaining whenever possible.
  3. You need to be active on social media and encourage visitors to share your content socially.
