Internet Marketing: How to Get More Retweets

If Twitter had a currency, it’d definitely be the retweet. A retweet is a sign of approval, of authority. It not only gives you a sign that someone likes what you had to say; it gives you a way to communicate to that person’s audience, which is likely full of people outside of your own network.

For every retweet you get, you are sending your message out to more and more people.

Write Content That Attracts Attention

Naturally, the best thing you can do to get a retweet is to write content that is appealing. But what does that look like?

The most attractive tweets for retweets:

  • Use hashtags (anywhere from one to three)
  • Have links
  • Are between 71 and 100 characters long
  • Ask questions
  • Are interesting.

That last one – having an interesting tweet – is hard to nail down simply because there is no formula for what makes a tweet interesting.

That is where you have to observe your audience, see what they retweet, and talk about things that intrigue them. Practice makes perfect, but so does listening to your target market.

Take Advantage of a Few Tips and Tricks

There are other things you can do to increase the chances of your tweets becoming retweet material.

The first is to simply ask. Tweets with “Please RT” are far more likely to be retweeted than those without. You don’t want to use “Please RT” with every tweet; be selective and pick the ones you want most to promote.

Mentioning other people also increases your chances. Most people will retweet a tweet that has their name in it, especially if it is positive.

Try putting the link in the middle of the tweet, too. More people will click on it, which means more people will read what you have to say and are more likely to retweet it.

Finally, try not to talk about yourself. People don’t often retweet people who are just talking about themselves, what they do, and what they like.
